Cinnamon contains the active substance MHCP a hydroxychalcone which acts as a mimetic for insulin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, i.e. it has insulinomimetic action.
Taking MHCP stimulates glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis at a similar level to insulin. In a study conducted, glycogen synthesis was inhibited by both bortmannin and LY294002, anti-PI-3-kinase inhibitors. In addition, MHCP treatment activated glycogen synthesis and inhibited glycogen kinase-3-beta synthesis activities, known effects of insulin treatment. Insulin receptor analysis showed that the receptor was phosphorylated upon exposure to MHCP. This implies that insulin flux was activated by MHCP.
